What makes a Corpse Party game a Corpse Party game? *SPOILERS!*

This will be a collaborative effort in which we list down points in which what makes a Corpse Party game a Corpse Party game. It especially helps if they also appear in the other canon games and fan games. For now, the soundtracks, manga, novellas, and OVAs does not count in this list as well as Corpse Party 2: DEAD PATIENT [PC].

The following points must at least appear from:

WHAT MAKES A CORPSE PARTY GAME?

  • Include Blue Spirits and Red Spirits [98/BC/BCRF/BS/2U/CZ/IF/CF/IFPE].
  • Includes a girl in red clothing [98/BC/BCRF/BS/2U/CZ/IF/IFPE/C0].
  • An event must happen in the Girls' Lavatory [98/BC/BCRF/BS/2U/CZ/IF/IFPE].
  • Set inside an abandoned schoolhouse [98/BC/BCRF/BS/2U/CZ/IF/CF/IFPE/C0].
  • A ritual must be involved using a paper doll [BC/BCRF/BS].
  • A ghost story must be told [98/CZ/C0].
  • The party is composed of school students [98/BC/BCRF/BS/2U/CZ/IF/CF/IFPE/C0].
  • A yellow ribbon is used [98/CZ/CF].
  • You collect Name Tags [BC/BCRF/BS].
  • A corpse explains the details behind the schoolhouse [98/BC/BCRF/CZ/C0].
  • Earthquakes occur [98/BC/BCRF/BS/CZ/C0].
  • Anatomical Models [98/BC/BCRF/2U/CZ/IF/CF/IFPE].
  • The party gets chased by a killer [98/BC/BCRF/BS/CZ/IF/CF/IFPE].

Unless the plan is to build an exhaustive list akin to those seen on TV Tropes, I think we should consider this question from an angle where we try to remove as much as possible, only leaving the core essenses of what makes Corpse Party what it is. Once we disregard all the superficial assetts, I think we are left with these essential elements.

  • A tragic death resulting from someone being wronged and/or a heinous crime and the afterlife of the victim acting as the main plot device.
  • A curse caused by negative emotions that is now spiraling out of control due to this tragic event.
  • Closed spaces, the curse manifesting a haunted supernatural location that exists outside the real world.
  • Survivors who's been sucked into said closed spaces and now have to cooperate in order to survive and escape.
  • Themes exploring human emotions and relations.
  • A constantly present sense of danger and the characters tackling their fears in face of it.
  • Interactions with the dead, their bodies and their former belongings used to advance the plot.

How about...


  • Generally killing off the kindest people in-game.


(Mayu, Yui, Seiko, Kurosaki, Mitsuki, Fukuroi, Nana, Tohko, Ohkawa, Katayama, etc.) Like, the really big sweethearts. They tend to die the worst it seems, too. Like kindness gets you killed the worst.

thanks to a conversation I had today I came up with this one:

- Characters face unspeakable and unimaginable terrors/horrors/pain.


that guy claimed he would find Corpse party way more scarier if the graphics and Gameplay were more like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. I couldnt disagree more.
big part of the games, for me, is that WE dont see what the characters see. we just get a it told to us while the screen is black. our imagination does the rest. it wouldnt be Corpse Party anymore if the game would show the player everything that happens.

Oh my gosh, yes! THIS. It's called "psychological horror" for a reason, you know? You're exactly correct. I've never played a game that takes such control of my imagination before, and I find that personally fascinating and hardly ever done.

You notice even in the anime versions of Corpse Party, they were careful about what was shown will the child killings, as they weren't shown in definite detail either in BC. It's left to the brain...and that's scarier than any sort of Silent Hill game could be to me, to be honest.

I've got some.


  • A location that screws with your perception, has a mind of it's own, and changes layout through a destructive force. (As in the earthquakes.)
  • Taking humans weaknesses, and takes advantage of them(with Ayumi's fear, or Seiko's mother's loss.), twists them to a negative point, where it's beyond going back (Kizami, maybe Morishige.), or just abuses them (Yuka's dependence on Satoshi.)
  • Where spirits can be both ally or threat, changing any moment.
  • Relying on the spiritual world, and forcing others to overcome horrifying sights, phobias, fears, weaknesses and thoughts to survive.
  • Where you are always being followed, or watched.
  • Whether you are in a group, or alone, your NEVER safe.
  • Where you are always guaranteed to suffer, whether in death, or alive.
  • Where ANYTHING can happen. Something minor turning into something huge.
  • Where if dead, your fate is sealed.
  • Allies can become enemies, and vice versa.
  • You can be affected, or never safe in RL, even if you survive.
  • Where bits and pieces of the past are visible, either twisted or just old. (Like writtings with missing letters.) And past events becoming center stage of the plot.
    If I come up with more, I'll post.
    But yeah, this is a pretty interesing topic. It almost seems like Silent Hill, just much less based on the main character, without overly heavy simbolism, like with it creatures, and their actions.

Whether by Windblast or by choke hold, whether by the steel of my Folding Blade or the swiftness of Blink, whether by Possession or by the power of thine Pistol, none shall evade either my Wrath, or my Mercy. For the Outsider gazes from his Void, the fate of all, are in the hands of those, marked by him.

Did anyone say the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and helplessness? For the most part, anyone in HH is pretty powerless to change their fate. I keep saying Satoshi and friends just got kinda lucky.
